When most people think of a sword, whether they know the name of it or not, they often think of katana swords. Katana swords can be literally found anywhere; in Hollywood movies, popular video games, a magnificent collection, or even at flea markets! In feudal Japan, katana swords were carried by the samurai, and as a result, people often associate the distinct appearance of katanas with martial arts films, or Japanese films featuring the samurai.

Katana swords date back to as far as 1185, which is the beginning of what is known as the Kamakura period. It wasn’t until later that, when combat required faster access to weapons, the katana began to increase in popularity. The katana was worn by the samurai with an “obi”, which was a sash that held the sword with the dull edge of the sword facing down. The nature in which the katana is drawn allowed the samurai to, in one swift motion, unsheathe his weapon, and attack his enemy, resulting in a very quick and deadly attack. If executed properly, but opponent would die after this fluid motion. Before this, the tachi, another Japanese sword, was worn in the opposite fashion. The dull side of the blade faced upwards, and was not as lethal in a short, intense battle. In case the katana failed to do the job, the samurai was well prepared. He would often carry another sword, while shaped a lot like a katana, the secondary sword, often a wakizashi, was much smaller, and often of a poorer quality, but it still had the distinct katana shape.

Almost two and a half feet in length, and made with brilliant craftsmanship, the katana is a deadly sword that has stood the test of time. These swords can cut through many hard objects that would utterly destroy many other swords. A genuine katana sword is made from a combination of high carbon steel, and low carbon steel, the two of which form a hybrid steel that gets the best of both materials. One of the steel materials is much sharper, but as a result it breaks easier, whereas the other steel has a very small carbon amount in it so as a result it is more suitable for absorbing shock from striking objects, and this increases the durability and strength of the sword. The swordsmithing process for katana swords is extremely labor intensive, but many katana swords found today are made of poor quality materials, and without expert craftsmanship. The quality of the sword is often reflected in the price of the sword, as a sword built to authentic standards takes an extremely long time to build. The polishing stage of the creation of a katana can take over three weeks, resulting in an extremely sharp blade that has become mirrored due to immense polishing.

Due to its deadliness and unique appearance, katana swords have been in hundreds of video games. It would be pointless to try to list all of the games that katana swords have appeared in, but any seasoned gamer will know many games that feature katanas. One of the most legendary game series of all time, Nina Gaiden, features katana swords. The Ninja Gaiden games have spanned many platforms, and have been around for over two decades now. If that’s a little bit too old school for you, even the well known Halo 3 game features a katana. While this katana cannot be used, it is merely a piece of armor that you can “unlock”, it is a sought after piece of armor due to its easily recognizable appearance.

In some parts of the world, katana swords are banned, restricted, or entirely illegal to possess. Since 2008, the United Kingdom has classified the katana sword as part of the Offensive Weapons Order, and as a result, violating this law would find you with six months in jail, and a fine totalling 5000 GBP, which is nearly 7500 dollars. Some people are allowed to obtain these swords still, but the decision was made but to dozens of attacks using these deadly swords.

Katana swords can vary widely with regards to price. Some can be found at a local swap meet or flea market for less than $20, but you will not be getting a genuine, authentic katana for that price. While some katana swords are essentially priceless, there are still many katana swords available for a fairly modest price, but with great quality.

Collecting knives has become a serious hobby throughout the United States and the rest of the world. It is considered to be an exciting hobby and a good investment, as many knives will continue to grow in value over time.

There are many different aspects to knife collecting that are not fully realised by the average consumer. It does appear at first to be a rather arbitrary item to be collecting, more so than a sword as knives are less often decorative though with just as much history.

As with buying swords, for a newcomer it is better to first talk to people about the different types you can invest in, rather than buying straight off the bat. If you begin your purchases without sufficient research you will almost certainly end up with items you do not desire, and out of money. Many collect certain brand names, such as Remington or Winchester; with established brands like these you can be more certain of the product you are receiving as you can view customer reviews on each respective website.

The most sought after knife is a ‘mint’ one, this of course means a brand new one. A brand new knife has obvious benefits, it will be both visually and ergonomically superior to any used knife you may purchase. However, older knives often have more desirability; they will likely have a story and can be in very good condition with the added bonus of being significantly cheaper than a mint knife.

If you are serious about beginning a collection, it is advisable to visit knife shows; Here you will find both buyers and sellers and you will be able to see your purchase and discuss with different people and hopefully receive some tips and/or warnings. Furthermore, if you begin to collect a few knives and find enjoyment, it may be a good idea to develop a niche; it will be impossible to collect all the different types of knife available on the market, so it may be best to find a type that you like and become an expert on that particular model; for example, knives of a certain style or from a particular era.

The upkeep of any collection is of great importance and therefore must be taken into consideration before any purchase takes place. It is necessary for any consumer need to make sufficient time to clean; moisture and fingerprints will often lead to rust, so the collection must be stored in a dry place and wiped after handling. This simple process along with cleaning your knives once or twice a month will maintain the value of your collection for years to come.

So if you’re interested in collecting knives, buy books, magazines, visit shows and ask questions and you will have a hobby that will last a lifetime.

One of the most popular and sought after swords is the traditional Japanese Katana, commonly referred to as the Samurai sword. With their rich history and master craftsmanship (and of course there continuous presence in popular culture) they have become the centrepiece of any serious sword collector’s ornamental structure. They are the ultimate collector’s sword, and no collection is complete without one of these glorious instruments.

A Samurai sword is a type of sword that has been in production for over 600 years, since the Muromachi period. They have since been popularised in the sword world.

The Samurai sword is notable for its distinctive appearance: a curved, single edged blade with enough grip room to accommodate two hands. Due to its unique design, the Katana requires specialised precautions to handle it. The blade is very good for cutting and therefore improper use can lead to damage or severe injury.

The downfall with purchasing a Samurai sword is that it will cost you a considerable amount more to purchase an authentic one, than it would many other authentic swords. You will struggle to find an authentic Samurai sword for much less than $1000, and the price tag continues upward considerably from there.

You will find many decent looking replica’s for under the $300 dollar mark, though they will not be able to perform in the same manner as an authentic one. Many are without cross guards and are manufactured cheaply, meaning they will break easily. If purchasing for purely ornamental reasons then you may find this acceptable, but for actual use you will be disappointed.

As with any sword, special care must also be given to ensure the condition of the sword is maintained. If mishandled, the Katana may become severely damaged, often beyond repair. The blade should be stored at all times in its sheath, curve down and edge facing upward to maintain the edge. In order to prevent rust, the blade must remain well-oiled and must be polished frequently, as moisture from fingerprints has an adverse effect on the swords condition.

The Katana/Samurai sword is one which should be greatly appreciated, if you are considering purchasing one, decide where you will store it – you don’t want to spend hundreds, possibly thousands, of dollars only to realise there is no space for it and so store it in a dark room. The Samurai sword must be inspected frequently and aired out regularly. You may return to it years after its purchase and notice it is far from the condition it once was.

Katana swords are the traditional long blade sharp-edged swords used by samurais at the time of feudal
Japan. While they are no longer used for professional combat, these swords are still produced today by
professional artisans who have not only mastered the technique of swordsmanship but as well as the art
of creating swords with power, grace and flexibility.

These swords have been in existence since the early 13th century, and they were brought to Japan
from China via Korea. For over several centuries these swords have been used by Japanese warriors for
various purposes, such as in combats and wars, entertainment, education, and as well as a symbol of
class.

Katana swords are long, and they measure somewhere between 26 to 40 inches in length. They are
usually made of single-edged blades, but there are others which come with double or reverse-edge
blades, depending on the swordsman who made them. Aside from the blades these swords also
have a longer grip in order to accommodate both hands, unlike that of western swords. They are also
moderately curved so that they can keep up with fast-changing moves and styles in Japanese sword
combat.

There are basically two types of katana swords, the Wakisashi and the Tsurugi. Wakisashi swords are
the more commonly produced types, and they are short and have very sharp blades. On the other hand,
Tsurugi swords are double edged and very long, and back during the day samurai warriors used to carry
them around as a symbol of prestige.

If you are a big fan of Japanese culture and traditions, then for sure you will fancy owning a katana
sword. A lot of collectors fancy getting a sword or two, as they are easily available in the market. A
lot of katana swords today have been forged from original designs, and it is hard to tell the difference
between authentic and imitation swords.

Having a katana sword of your own (even if it is not the original), can give you a better understanding
about Japanese beliefs and cultures, as the swords have been used as symbols of power, combat and
class for over many centuries, spanning towards a number of eras and historical events. Through the
swords’ built, use and functions you will be able to realize that the Japanese are strong, pliant and ready
to face the challenges ahead of them, with their heads up high all the time.
