Katana swords are the traditional long blade sharp-edged swords used by samurais at the time of feudal
Japan. While they are no longer used for professional combat, these swords are still produced today by
professional artisans who have not only mastered the technique of swordsmanship but as well as the art
of creating swords with power, grace and flexibility.
These swords have been in existence since the early 13th century, and they were brought to Japan
from China via Korea. For over several centuries these swords have been used by Japanese warriors for
various purposes, such as in combats and wars, entertainment, education, and as well as a symbol of
class.
Katana swords are long, and they measure somewhere between 26 to 40 inches in length. They are
usually made of single-edged blades, but there are others which come with double or reverse-edge
blades, depending on the swordsman who made them. Aside from the blades these swords also
have a longer grip in order to accommodate both hands, unlike that of western swords. They are also
moderately curved so that they can keep up with fast-changing moves and styles in Japanese sword
combat.
There are basically two types of katana swords, the Wakisashi and the Tsurugi. Wakisashi swords are
the more commonly produced types, and they are short and have very sharp blades. On the other hand,
Tsurugi swords are double edged and very long, and back during the day samurai warriors used to carry
them around as a symbol of prestige.
